Parallel exhibition
‘Kafenes: Stories in Black and White’
18.06–31.08 2025
Claude Monet Hall, Coco_Creative Learning Centre, A. G. Leventis Gallery.

Inspired by – and presented in parallel with – the temporary exhibition ‘Look at Me!’ Portraits in Greece by Robert A. McCabe, the A. G. Leventis Gallery, in collaboration with the Oral History Project ‘People of Cyprus’, presents a parallel exhibition that showcases the culture and people of Cyprus.

Through this collaboration, Kafenes is born – a tribute to the traditional Cypriot coffee culture, in a time when it is either gradually fading or transforming into something new.

Exhibition Opening: Tuesday, June 17th 2025, at 19:00.

The traditional coffeehouses of Cyprus are custodians of heritage, preserving a deep-rooted love for memory and origins.

This ongoing dialogue with the past lies at the heart of the exhibition ‘Kafenes: Stories in Black and White Frames’ – a journey through time, a silent documentation of what is slowly disappearing. Through the lens of photography, quiet gestures, lost habits, and fading figures are captured – elements that vanish along with the old ‘kafenes’. The worn wooden table, the steaming cup of coffee, hands shuffling a deck of cards, the shadow of a patron at the door, the gaze of the coffeehouse owner patiently observing the flow of life. A world quietly fading.

A tribute to collective memory – to what once was and, in some way, still lives on.
