Composition is more typical of the artist’s anthropocentric paintings. The structural and chromatic austerity betrays a penetrating visual reading of the classical Greek art of antiquity, inspired by ancient funerary monuments. The work depicts two female figures seated facing each other, their hands on a table. One of them is nude, her chair covered by white cloth, while the other is dressed in black, giving a distinct meditative and sorrowful tone to the atmosphere.
The palette ranges from blue through black, white and grey to ochre, warmed up by touches of reddish brown. The schematisation of figures and elements of space in this painting reflects the transition from the artist’s earlier, more naturalistic style towards his later, more abstract forms that was ultimately manifested in his Funeral Compositions.
