‘Mirror mirror on the wall… who is the most fairest of them all?’

How do I see myself? How do I want others to see me? (Who am I really?)
In honour of International Women’s Day, we focus on female self-portraiture — the artist’s form as captured by her own hand — and explore how women painters both introduce themselves and take a stand against the male-dominated art world. Through their works, pioneering artists “confide” their (often unspoken) personal stories. Like a shattered mirror, they reflect different versions of female identity — sometimes distorted, sometimes revealing — mirroring ideas and images: patriarchy, power dynamics, the female body, and the depths of the female soul.
What do these portraits ultimately reveal about the artists — and about ourselves?
