DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 14 October 2026\, at 19.30\n‘Constantine Leventis’ Auditorium\, A. G. Leventis Gallery \n‘Art in Public Space: \nHistory\, Challenges and Transformations’ \nThe A. G. Leventis Gallery welcomes Dr. Syrago Tsiara\, Art Historian and Director General of the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum\, as part of its Wednesday Lectures series. \nTaking as its starting point the history of public sculpture in Europe from the 19th century to the present day\, Dr Syrago Tsiara will trace the changes in the ways art occupies\, gives meaning to and transforms public space. The lecture will shed light on issues of historicity\, transformation and the changing role\, forms and audiences of public art\, while also addressing cases involving the rupture or removal of monuments from public space—phenomena that reflect shifts in the culture of managing the public sphere by local communities\, nation-states\, institutions and citizens’ groups. \nDr Syrago Tsiara is an art historian and curator. Since 2022\, she has served as Director General of the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum. She studied History and Archaeology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Social History of Art at the University of Leeds\, while her doctoral dissertation focused on the role of public sculpture in shaping national memory. She worked in Thessaloniki\, initially as curator of the Costakis Collection at the State Museum of Contemporary Art and subsequently as Director of the Contemporary Art Centre\, the Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art and the MOMus Museum of Contemporary Art.
