Savva painted Bathers in Kyrenia in the summer of 1957. In this oil painting, Lhote’s influences are obvious as regards both the choice of subject matter – it combines two of his teacher’s favourite themes: the landscape and the nude – and its pictorial negotiation. Savva organised his subject matter guided by the values of harmony, balance and order. He used the classical rhythm, in which vertical corners dominate, and thus, through their static character, he succeeded in conveying peace and tranquillity. To the severity of the structural elements of the built space which dominate the left side of the painting, Savva juxtaposed the organic curves of the female forms.
