δημ. 87 ή 88.

NOTE: Ollivier is almost exclusively known as the depicter of elegant ladies and society gatherings – most famously of Le Thé à l’Anglaise Servi dans le Salon des Quatre-Glaces au Palais du Temple à Paris avec Toute la Cour du Prince de Conti, Écoutant le Jeune Mozart (1766; Versailles). When he exhibited one of these in the Salon of 1767, an anonymous critic praised him for having revived ‘le genre agréable des scènes galantes & champêtres, si regretté depuis Watteau’. His known drawings are of this character, but there was one in Jean Masson’s first sale, Paris, 7-8 May 1923, lot 169, called La Convalescente, that shows an older woman in a cape and hood seated in a chair and also departs from the norm. The handling of the black chalk in the present drawing, however, is less linear and more painterly than this or any other known drawing by Ollivier.

ProVenAnce: Anon. sale, Salle des Ventes des chevau-Légers (G. Blache), Versailles, 27 April 1967, in lot 87 or 88.
